The new Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport metro railway will become the transport spine for Greater Western Sydney, connecting communities and travellers with the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport and the growing region. The city-shaping project spans from St Marys through to the new airport and Bradfield City Centre, linking residential areas with job hubs including the new Bradfield Metro Station (previously Aerotropolis), and connect travellers from the new airport to the rest of Sydney’s public transport system.
Cultural Capital was engaged to author the public art plan, and manage the briefing, design development and delivery of nine commissions, including six standalone artworks at each station, one landmark ‘linewide’ Connecting with Country artwork, and two artworks in the landscape adjacent to the alternative transport corridor that connects the stations.
Working with Sydney Metro, Parklife Metro, Hassell and the client-side design, planning and contracting team, Cultural Capital has worked to ensure that the artworks are supported in the base build design and into the customer journey.
Cultural Capital is currently commencing on the design development stage of the program, working closely with Parklife Metro’s design and construction teams to deliver 9 artworks across the stations, alternative transport corridor, and public domain. Cultural Capital will also support artists as they carry out self determined community consultation which differs between commissions as relevant to place and community.
