Cultural Capital is the Creative Producer for the new Acute Services Building at Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital (SDMH). The scope includes stakeholder engagement, curating the commissioning program, authoring the Arts in Health Strategy and delivering the art program from procurement to installation and handover.

This project champions contemporary artists mostly living or working in the regional area of the Local Health District, highlighting Cultural Capital’s capacity for working within and outside of metropolitan centres.

SDMH services a tightknit community. An extensive engagement phase across the clinical and administration teams at the hospital and various local community, the strategy was developed to highlight the unique identity of the Hospital, and the people who visit every day.

The arts program was developed to ensure a breadth of media and artists would be presented, therefore offering a range of experiences for everyone who uses the Hospital.

Improving clinical outcomes for patients is a key function of this Arts in Health program, artists will complete work for the Mental Health Unit and Paediatrics.

With the Arts in Health Strategy endorsed in March 2024, Cultural Capital is now at the artist procurement stage.

Ongoing engagement with the project managers, architect, builder, clinical staff and community representatives will ensure the needs and values of the Shoalhaven stay central to the art program throughout delivery.
