Heffron Centre with Re-Right Collective

“Throughout the artworks we’ve looked at the coastline to be a very important part of storytelling. You know, really looking at the Country from a top view of where Aboriginal people have travelled across these different areas of the coastline.”

Dennis Golding

“This artwork recognises and pays respects to the traditional owners of this land and will give every visitor the opportunity to engage with our area’s unique and vibrant Aboriginal culture.”
– Randwick Mayor, Dylan Parker

Shimmer explores significant seasonal events in the Bidjigal calendar, such as the Mullet Run and the migration of stingrays into Kamay (Botany Bay) through a large-scale mural, installation and internal glazing artwork throughout the Heffron Sports Centre in Maroubra by the Aboriginal artist collaboration, Re-Right Collective (Dennis Golding and Carmen Glynn-Braun).

The ‘Shimmer’ concept takes on various forms throughout the site. Firstly, there is an intricate line-work mural in shimmering gold that spans the facade of the gym. Additionally, there is an integrated wall piece at the western entrance, featuring small bronze cast artifacts representing the movement of mullet out of Botany Bay. Inside the gym, the mullet run motif continues on the glass panels of the interior walls.

Cultural Capital was brought on board to develop an artist brief and curatorial vision for the Heffron Centre. To ensure a diverse range of perspectives and expertise, we formed a public art panel consisting of representatives from the La Perouse Land Council, the Rabbitohs, Randwick Art Advisory Panel, and other project stakeholders. We worked with Curator Tess Allas to select Re-Right Collective, composed of Carmen Glynn-Braun and Dennis Golding. The artwork was fabricated by Tilt Design, and the bronze pieces were created by Australian Bronze. These collaborations helped bring the vision of the Re-Right Collective to life, creating a culturally significant art installation for the community to enjoy.
