Rhodes Recreation Centre Public Art Strategy

Cultural Capital was engaged by the City of Canada Bay to deliver public art curation and consultation services for the new Rhodes Recreation Centre, a significant community facility designed to support health and social connection.

Council sought a contemporary art program that would reflect local identity, contribute to place activation, and integrate seamlessly with the building and public domain. Cultural Capital was selected for its expertise in commissioning and delivering complex public art projects in civic environments.

Our team undertook a detailed contextual review of the site, including community demographics, the cultural and environmental history of Rhodes, architectural characteristics and the existing Peninsula art collection. Rhodes is a diverse, rapidly growing community strongly connected to river landscapes and shared public spaces. This informed the curatorial vision Play, Perform, Reflect, Repeat!, positioning the Centre as a cultural hub where art encourages movement, interaction and moments of pause. The resulting Public Art Strategy proposes a cohesive suite of artworks delivered across several key sites in and around the Centre.

Together, these works establish a unified public art experience that prioritises health and wellbeing—a key thematic gap identified within Rhodes’ broader public art context. Cultural Capital developed clear commissioning frameworks, procurement pathways, artist selection structures and a phased delivery timeline in partnership with Council, aligned to the Centre’s development and launch schedule.
