Dunwhich (Goompi) Masterplan Cultural Placemaking Strategy

Cultural Capital worked in a team led by Urbis and including Cox Architects and Diadem to deliver a masterplan for Dunwich (Goompi); the gateway town to North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah).

Cultural Capital was the lead cultural placemaking consultant. The masterplan objectives included providing opportunities to celebrate and promote Quandamooka culture; improving liveability with infrastructure and service upgrades; and enhancing the town’s appeal as a tourism-friendly destination. The work was delivered within a framework that respected cultural, social and environmental values.

Cultural Capital developed the high-level overarching vision for the project, the place narrative and a values framework, as well as a more detailed art and place strategy. Our work was required to realise social, cultural and economic value. It needed to identify, protect and enhance the unique aspects of Quandamooka culture including heritage sites, sacred places, public art and activities. It was also required to promote cultural exchange and sharing of knowledge between the Quandamooka people, local community and visitors.
