Throughout 2024, Cultural Capital and Yerrabingin worked together with Transport for NSW to deliver Aboriginal Cultural Advisory Services to inform the integration of public art across the Picton Road Upgrade between Nepean River and Almond Street, Wilton:
The project involved preparing a methodology to engage with identified and local knowledge holders in the Dharawal area, and undertake community engagement to ensure culturally safe, relevant and informed cultural narratives for the public art opportunities.
Collaborating with Indigenous owned and led organisation, Yerrabingin, ensured self-determined and authentic engagement with community to identify a long-list of artists and artwork opportunities for the project. Artwork opportunities include integrated art across infrastructure, sound walls and bridges, Welcome to Country signage and opportunities for user pathways, underpasses and overpasses.
The long-list of artists reflect and celebrate Dharawal Culture in the area and provide a platform for Aboriginal storytelling.
Cultural Capital worked closely with Transport for NSW, Yerrabingin and the local community to manage the development and delivery of the project, and to present a series of artwork opportunities and briefs for procurement and fabrication.
This project demonstrates the opportunity of public art to enhance public infrastructure and celebrate Aboriginal culture.
