355-357 Sussex Street Public Art Strategy

Cultural Capital was engaged by Mulpha Australia to prepare the public art strategy for a new hotel at 355–357 Sussex Street.

Cultural Capital’s work encompassed comprehensive site analysis; development of the curatorial vision; identification of the location and typologies for art; a framework for procurement; a methodology for delivery and project reporting and establishment of project governance.

The art strategy drew from the rich cultural context of the site, situated in vibrant China Town. The site was once the rehearsal space for INXS, and is now a gay-owned and operated sauna. The curatorial vision paid particular attention to the LGBTQIA+ community and Sydney’s Asian communities.

The strategy looked to activate the hotel with captivating art and events, creating a destination within a destination for visitors to Sydney and locals alike.

The proposed art opportunities included a contemporary intervention on the heritage facade, an artist in residence activation program and an interior installation for the hotel lobby.

The strategy aimed to celebrate the site’s colourful stories and histories with vibrant, captivating art and activation.
