Cultural Placemaking

Dunwich (Goompi) Masterplan
Completed: 2018 – 2019
Client: Queensland Government Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning (DSDMIP)
Cultural Capital worked in a team led by Urbis to deliver a masterplan for Dunwich (Goompi); the gateway town to North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah). Cultural Capital was the cultural placemaking lead for the project.
The masterplan objectives included providing opportunities to celebrate and promote Quandamooka culture; improving liveability with infrastructure and service upgrades; and enhancing the town’s appeal as a tourism-friendly destination. The work was delivered within a framework that respected cultural, social and environmental values.
Cultural Capital developed the high-level overarching vision for the project, the place narrative and a values framework, as well as a more detailed art and place strategy. The strategy identified protected and enhanced the unique aspects of Quandamooka culture including heritage sites, sacred places, public art and activities and promoted cultural exchange between the Quandamooka people, local community and visitors.
